TELEPHONE SCAM

April 1st, 2011, The Knox County Sheriff's Department was made aware of a telephone scam involving a company called American Legal Services.

The victim in this case received a telephone call from a male subject having what was described as a "heavy Indian accent".  The caller told the victim that his social security number was under investigation and he was involved in a lawsuit.  The caller offered the victim a chance to settle this matter out of court by making a payment to the company. The caller knew the victim's name, address and the last four digits of his social security number.

American Legal Services has posted an alert on its website warning people of the scam.

The Knox County Sheriff's Department wants to remind everyone NOT to give out their credit card, social security or other personal information to people over the phone or Internet without first verifying the company's legitimacy.
